A few photographs from the shoot on Monday. Thank you again to Georgie for being an amazing model, and to Alex for doing the make-up! I’m currently exploring Photoshop CS5 some more, so I will upload some experimental edits soon!

Some rough drawings I’ve sketched together in preparation for the makeup studio photo shoot I’m planning on Monday with Georgie and Alex

An image I have created by playing around with some photo manipulation techniques, using a make shift studio and Photoshop CS5.

“Experiment - Ideas and Practice” Project:

As second year of university comes to a close, we have been preparing for the end of year ‘Experimental Exhibition’. Everyone from Media Arts has put in an exceptional amount of time and work throughout the year, with great results! The three images above are the final photographs (The Human Solution) that I have created for this module, after a lot of trial and error, Photoshop tutorials and cups of tea I have finally finished. Enjoy!

“Experiment - Ideas and Practice” Project:
Throughout the year we have been working towards our final pieces for the end of year ‘Experimental Exhibition’. The module began with two strands, exploring still and moving image. For this I created the short film ‘Colours’ and the ‘Reaction’ photo shoot.
My experimentation with ink in water generated connotations of levitation, gravity and motion. It was during this process that I came to the conclusion that I wanted to create the illusion of levitation through image manipulation.
Throughout this process I have been debating which medium I should use for the final outcome, after various test shoots using both still and moving image (as inspired by various practitioners such as Viola, Askill, Salomon, Juana, Engsfors, Boobyk, Lupton, Nguyen and Sarenac), I came to the conclusion that photography would be my most effective medium.
During this process I came across the works of Ernest Becker and his philosophy that man seeks his own significance in the world to obtain immortality, through the three solutions of creativity, romanticism and religion. I decided to portray this theory through three images, separately expressing each of the ‘three solutions’. Furthermore, by creating the illusion of levitation I have aimed to enhance the supernatural and unworldly idea of immortality.
Altogether, I have photographed three studio shoots in order to capture the best possible outcome. With each shoot came new and refined ideas that have effected the overall outcome of my piece. Initially I wanted my levitating subjects to be incorporated within appropriate backgrounds, for example the ‘love’ solution initially would have appeared as a couple levitating over a double bed, ‘creativity’ would have been a female subject levitating in a library reading a book and the ‘religious’ solution was going to be a model levitating over water. However due to time restrictions, weather, locations and the difficulty of transporting a bed into the university studio made these ideas difficult to achieve.
Therefore, I began to adjust my idea in order to fit my criteria. I have been working on the post production for my refined idea over the last few days and I hope for the triptych to be fully completed on Tuesday in time for the Plymouth University - Media Arts ‘Experimental Exhibition’ on Friday 16th (1700-2000), so keep your eyes peeled :)
